While the inauguration was all about Donald Trump, a few other strange moments caught the attention of viewers after onlookers contributed a few awkward moments and uncomfortable glances
Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the US – but the star-studded event was not without its awkward moments.
The Republican is set to embark on his second term in office, after he was sworn in as the 47th president of the US. Today, Monday January 20, marks a national holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr day, an occasion to mark equality in the country. But cameras caught all angles inside the White House’s Rotunda and managed to capture a few strange moments from guests.
From former president George Bush pulling a few strange faces, to JD Vance taking a strange sitting stance, social media fans went into a frenzy watching the historic event. Several other familiar faces were at the event, including Elon Musk, former presidents Obama and Biden, and even singers such as Carrie Underwood.
1. JD ‘Stance’
New Vice President JD Vance was sat alongside Trump in the ceremonial room – but onlookers couldn’t help but comment on his interesting seating choice. He sat with his legs spread wide, which appeared to capture more attention than Trump’s promise to send Americans to Mars.
One X user shared a photo of him, and captioned it: “JD Vance manspreading at the inauguration. We are so back.” Another simply replied with an excited “Yeah!”
2. Hiding in the Bushes
George Bush was one of the famous faces attending the event alongside his wife and former first lady, Laura. While he did not react much to Trump’s wild announcements – such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America – he did not hold back on giving a few weird looks in the crowd.
While in the crowd, some X users noticed him, stood next to the Clintons, looking around awkwardly. He stood still, while scanning the room and giving an awkward face.
Looking out of place, he eventually smiled to himself before rising his eyebrows. A viewer commented: “I love George Bush and his 10-year-old-Christmas-concert-spirit.”
3. Clinton’s wandering eye
While watching Carrie Underwood perform, or the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, walk out – some accused Bill Clinton of giving them the eye.
On the camera, he appeared to be staring at Carrie directly and zoned out. He snapped out of his supposed trance after everyone around him started clapping. “Never change Bill Clinton, never change,” wrote a fan who zoomed in on the footage.
In fact another clip showed Clinton mouth-opened and wide eyed as he looked around the audience during Trump’s speech. The daze-like state never appeared to end.
4. Trump’s screensaver catch
It may have been a huge historical event, with the first felon ever sworn in as president, but attention was on his lock screen. It simply showed him pulling a serious face.
On the phone, which was captured by a photographer over his shoulder while he was in a car, messages could be seen congratulating him following his swearing-in. The photo of himself did not include any of his family or close friends.
5. Melania’s kiss snub
Attending her husband Donald Trump’s historic inauguration, the soon-to-be-first-lady, 54, chose “a very statement look, with the big fedora, perhaps to hide her face”, according to Darren Stanton, on behalf of Betfair Casino.
Her hat, which obscured most of her face, quickly became a talking point after Trump tried to kiss her cheek upon entering. Unable to reach, he simply kissed the air next to her face.
Melania’s hat – whether intentionally or not – stopped Trump from planting one the new first lady.
6. Biden’ my time
President Trump is not one to mince his words and his first speech was no exception. When addressing the nation, he couldn’t help but add a few jibes to the Biden-Harris administration, who were sat a few feet away.
“For many years, a radical and corrupt establishment has extracted power and wealth from our citizens, while the pillars of our society lay broken and seemingly in complete disrepair,” Trump said.
When the camera panned, several onlookers got on their feet to clap Trump. Biden and Harris, however, remained still and awkward in their seats. During other announcements, such as “mass deportations,” the pair could even be seen giving each other a strange look.
7. Elon’s maniacal laugh
The camera frequently showed new government member – Elon Musk. The man already has three lawsuits since the inauguration about his new branch of government.
That, however, did not stop his maniacal laughter. In one moment caught on camera, Elon could be seen cheering and laughing loudly next to Trump’s youngest child, Baron.
On the other hand, Baron looked awkward and silent. Two sides of the coin… or perhaps cent.
