The biggest container ship ever to call on the Port of Boston arrived in the harbor Sunday morning.Massachusetts has long been preparing to welcome the new class of ship to Boston Harbor, with Massport investing approximately $850 million in modernizing the Conley Container Terminal. That work included dredging the harbor, creating a deep-water berth and the purchase of three enormous ship-to-shore cranes. Two of the cranes are 205 feet tall and capable of lifting a container 160 feet into the air. When they arrived from China in June, Massport said the cranes were among the tallest low-profile cranes in the world. The third crane is 145 feet tall and capable of lifting a container 100 feet into the air. The industry began moving toward larger, Neo-Panamax vessels, after the 2016 expansion of the Panama Canal. The ship that arrived Sunday is Evergreen’s Ever Fortune, which was built in 2020. She is 1,100 feet long and about 160 feet wide. “Being ‘big ship ready’ increases Conley Terminal’s capacity to handle cargo,” Massport Port Director Mike Meyran said in a statement. “The investments we’ve made keep Boston competitive and ready for growth. Our infrastructure now opens new opportunities for our customers to ship more products and make global connections that were previously not possible.” The Army Corps of Engineers was also involved in the project to dredge the harbor.
