Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade was not terribly kind to House Republicans as drama envelops Speaker Mike Johnon’s effort to get reelected as House leader.
Johnson is facing an uphill battle securing votes from members of even his own party caucus to remain as House Speaker despite public endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump. Rep. Thomas Massie is a definitive “no,” while many other members of the Freedom Caucus are casting doubt on Johnson’s future as speaker, perhaps taking a principled position or simply negotiating to secure some favorable deal to get their vote.
Fox’s Aishah Hasnie had just reported that the numbers “do not look good” for Speaker Johnson. A seemingly exasperated Kilmeade went after Republicans, reminding them of how bad they looked when a similar drama occurred in the Fall of 2023.
“Do the Republicans realize how embarrassing it was when they went through those five rounds and how humiliating it was, I think, for the country and embarrassing it was global that we couldn’t pick a speaker for all those weeks after McCarthy was ousted?” Kilmeade asked Hasnie. “Do they fully understand that these are the same people they were holding out last time?”
“Exactly, they do. And we remember the first time with Kevin McCarthy. The house was frozen for five days,” Hasnie replied. :Then again, it was frozen for three weeks. And around that time, that’s when Israel was attacked by Hamas. So there were things happening around the world that require the House to take action on the floor. And we’re entering into this new administration.”
“President elect Trump is down in Mar a Lago. He’s got a lot of things that he wants to take care of day one. Not to mention, they’ve got to certify the election on January 6th. So they can’t do that. If there is no house. The house can not function without a speaker,” she continued. “So in a few hours here, there will be no Speaker Mike Johnson. There will be nobody that will be able to get the House work done until Republicans can come together. And they all have to come together because Democrats will not be helping them today.”
