Fox News contributor Karl Rove warned that President Donald Trump’s revelry in the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) supposed uncovering of “hundreds of billions” in government “fraud” will backfire when Democrats start to demand prosecutions.
In his lengthy address to Congress last week, Trump slammed what he described as “appalling waste” in government spending and lavished praise on the Elon Musk-led DOGE, asserting that it had uncovered “hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud” within federal agencies.
DOGE, on its official website, reports an estimated $105 billion in savings through fraud detection, contract and grant cancellations, real estate lease terminations, and other cost-cutting measures, but independent verification of that figure remains elusive.
Publicly available records on DOGE’s website only account for approximately $18.6 billion in documented savings, with the remaining $86 billion unexplained. Furthermore, scrutiny from media outlets has revealed accounting discrepancies—most notably, a misreported $8 billion saving from an immigration contract, later corrected to just $8 million.
Rove appeared on Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy to speak with host Katie Pavlich and praised Democratic strategist James Carville’s demand that Democrats exercise strategic patience and “shut up” while they “wait for a moment.”
Responding to Pavlich’s argument that the opposition party was “really in trouble,” Rove suggested Trump’s celebration of DOGE might give Democrats an opening they want:
When in doubt, listen to James Carville. He’s absolutely right the Democrats either shut up, sit down and get their act together and wait for a moment where they can begin to draw contrast with President Trump on things that the American people care about.
Some of the unfortunate language coming out of the administration is giving them a chance not now but later, for example the president talked about how DOGE found hundreds of millions of dollars – excuse me – billions of dollars of fraud. If there is fraud you want to go after the fraudsters and you want to indict them to recover the money.
The Democrats can conceivably wait a reasonable period of time and start to say where is the prosecution to the people that you said defrauded the government and when will you start putting them in jail.
James Carville is right, the Democrats just by being angry and they’re going to try to find moments where they could agree with the president and if they don’t agree with the president – the American people are sick and tired of that.
