A sheriff’s office in Florida is issuing an urgent warning to residents, particularly seniors, about a Bitcoin ATM scam that recently cost a 77-year-old victim over $120,000.
The scam involves fraudsters posing as bank representatives and instructing victims to withdraw money and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM. In this recent case, the victim lost $129,500 and is now pursuing charges, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).
The WCSO is urging residents to be vigilant and protect themselves from this type of fraud. They offer the following key reminders.

Don’t answer unsolicited calls: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a bank and you don’t recognize the number, hang up or block the number.
Never withdraw money based on phone instructions: Legitimate banks and organizations will never ask you to withdraw money and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM or purchase gift cards.
Be wary of cryptocurrency and gift card requests: These are often red flags for scams.
The WCSO encourages residents to stay informed about the latest scams and how to report fraud by visiting the AARP Florida’s Fraud Resource Center or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website.
