A new auction aptly titled “Punks, Monsters, Smut & Madmen: A Countercultural Cross-Section” features dozens of items that live up to its name. Among them are a pair of blood-signed underwear that belonged to late shock-punker GG Allin and strands of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain‘s hair.
Potter & Potter Auctions is holding the sale at their headquarters in Chicago on March 6th, but online bidding has already begun.
Among the other standout items are a storefront awning for defunct New York City punk club CBGB’s nearby gift shop, as well as an original piece of CBGB’s dressing room wall, among other artifacts from the legendary venue.
The GG Allin underwear is described as “Blood-Signed and Inscribed Personal Underwear. N.d. Underwear briefs belonging to GG Allin. Signed in blood over the fly and INSCRIBED ‘Suck my ass it smells’ to the reverse side. Stable; one hole near rear inscription; seemingly used; staining.”
If the strands of Cobain’s hair seem familiar, a similar sale took place in 2021, where six strands of his hair were sold via Iconic Auctions. That lot ended up selling for $14,145. The description on the new auction matches that of the one three years ago, with both listing Tessa Osbourne as the person who cut the Nirvana singer’s hair. However, the new lot only contains two strands of hair, indicating that the person who purchased the initial lot may be selling a portion of their winnings.
Other items in the auction include lyric sheets, posters, CDs, and vinyl, including some signed by the Ramones and Dead Kennedys.
