Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) blasted his own party as “toxic” and argued their previous “currency” was “shaming and scolding” voters.
Fetterman appeared on the Somebody’s Gotta Win podcast this week and was asked about his party being “toxic” and whether Democrats can “win back” white men.
“I think their primary currency was shaming and scolding and talking down to people and telling them, ‘Hey, I know better than you, or you’re dopes, or you’re a bro, or you’re ignorant or, how can you be this dumb? I can’t imagine it. And then, by the way, they’re fascists. How can you vote for that?” he said.
The senator argued that Democrats have gone to the “extreme” with Trump and his supporters. He said he knows plenty of voters in Pennsylvania who support Trump who are not “fascists” and don’t support things like the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“They don’t support insurrection and those things. And if you go to an extreme, and you become a boutique kind of proposition, then you’re going to lose the argument. And we have done that,” Fetterman argued.
“How do Democrats win back white men like yourself?” host Tara Palmeri asked.
“I don’t know, and truthfully, I’m not sure. I’m not sure if that’s possible, to be honest. Men are to blame or their masculinity is toxic,” Fetterman said. “Or if you unless you’re able to conform to our very strict kinds of definition of what we think is appropriate. Well, then I’m just I’m going to find an alternative. And they, they’ve done that.”
