Celebrity-loved plus-size fashion retailer Torrid will be closing 180 of its retail stores this year.
Torrid CEO Lisa Harper shared a statement regarding the store closings, which come amid net sales of the brand decreasing from $279.8 million to $266 million, or 4.9%, compared to the first quarter of 2024.
“We’re accelerating our transformation to a more digitally led business, which includes optimizing our retail footprint,” Harper wrote in the statement. “We now plan to close up to 180 underperforming stores this year—allowing us to reduce fixed costs and reinvest in areas that drive long-term growth, including customer acquisition and omnichannel enhancements.”

In addition to seeing a decrease in net sales, the company also saw a decrease in gross profit margin from 41.3% to 38.1%. The company had a total of 658 stores in May of 2024, with the retail locations decreasing to 632 stores as of May this year.
Now, the company plans to focus more on digital, which makes up 70% of the brand’s overall demand, to meet customers where they are.
“We remain in a strong financial position and are executing with clarity and focus,” Harper concluded her statement. “I’m incredibly proud of our team’s commitment to delivering innovative product, deepening customer connections, and building a more agile, resilient business for the future.”
Torrid began operations in 2001 at the Brea Mall in Brea, Calif. The brand, which caters to women’s sizes 10 to 30, and bra sizes 36C to 54D, saw a boom in the 2010s when several celebrities were spotted wearing the clothes or voicing their support for the brand.
