Sir Rod Stewart appeared on live TV ahead of Celtic’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich and the legendary rocker had pundits in hysterics during an entertaining interview
Sir Rod Stewart had quite the laugh on live TV, admitting he’d indulged in a few drinks during an interview before Celtic’s Champions League 2-1 defeat against Bayern Munich.
The iconic rocker and renowned Celtic fan was caught in a hilarious moment on CBS on Wednesday. The 80-year-old musician, frequently seen cheering from the stands with family, couldn’t help but crack jokes with former footballing great Peter Schmeichel, even telling a crowd of 60,000 to “shut up” as they chanted during his interview – much to Schmeichel’s amusement.
Sir Rod continued to shine as he left Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards, Thierry Henry, and Kate Scott in fits of laughter with his cheeky comments. Sir Rod mistakenly called Schmeichel “Gordon Banks” and hilariously dubbed Richards ‘Big Knees’ instead of his ‘Big Meeks’ nickname.
When queried by Peter about his evident passion for the club, Sir Rod quipped, “I’ve had a couple,” sending the ex-Manchester United keeper into laughter before joking: “You better get me off the air now. I’m embarrassing myself.”
And when Jamie questioned if Celtic could triumph on the night, Stewart optimistically replied, “Yeah, it could be a big night… Whatever happens, I’m so proud of this club, and I’m proud to be interviewed by Gordon Banks! ” Yet, the light-hearted banter didn’t end there.
He was then asked by Emma Dodds if he was enjoying his day, Sir Rod responded: “It’s been wonderful. I’ve had a couple of drinks as you can probably see. Wahey! Celtic is the love of my life apart from my wife and children. As long as we stay in the competition, as long as we don’t get humped tonight.”
In classic Sir Rod fashion, he danced to a Celtic chant as his interview wrapped up. He then broke into an impromptu rendition of ‘Maggie May’ with Jamie. The interview didn’t go unnoticed, with fans taking to social media to share their reactions. “I’m not Rod’s biggest fan for obvious reasons but he was pretty funny there,” admitted one Rangers supporter.
Another user praised: “Top man Rod.” A third posted: “Magnificent.” One fan enthused: “Inject this interview into my veins. So good,” while another declared: “This is one of the greatest pre game interviews in Champions League history.”
“Drunk Rod Stewart on the CBS broadcast this is the best sports coverage on earth,” another viewer exclaimed. This isn’t the first time Rod has enjoyed a few drinks before appearing live on TV ahead of a football match.
Back in 2017, he helped conduct the Scottish League Cup draw alongside former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs. Reflecting on the incident in 2022, he told FourFourTwo: “[I’d] drank a couple of bevvies and Sky asked me if I’d like to do [the draw].”
“I said, ‘Listen, I’ve had a couple of drinks’ and they said it was fine. I’m an ad lib guy and, lo and behold, I just p***** about a bit. I’m an ad lib guy and, lo and behold, I just p***** about a bit.”
