During Donald Trump’s second presidency, Democrats and their allies are offering a variety of views on where the Democratic Party should go from here and how best to respond to Trump’s policies.
Some progressives are arguing that Democrats need to turn up the heat on Trump as much as possible. But veteran Democratic strategist James Carville and “Real Time” host Bill Maher — both scathing Trump critics who view “woke” politics as detrimental to the Democratic Party — are urging Democrats to be selective in their criticism of Trump and not respond to every outrageous thing he posts on social media.
Democrats, Carville argues, should sit back and watch Trump self-destruct.

During a Sunday night, March 9 segment on Fox News, veteran GOP strategist Karl Rove agreed with Carville.
“When in doubt, listen to James Carville,” Rove told Fox News host Katie Pavlich. “I think he was absolutely right: the Democrats need to shut up, sit down and get their act together and wait for a moment where they can begin to draw a contrast with President trump on things that the American people care about.”
Rove added that Trump’s administration may be giving Democrats some political ammunition to use against him.
“Some of the unfortunate language coming out of the (Trump) Administration is giving them a chance — not now, but later,” Rove explained. “For example, the president talked about how DOGE has found hundreds of millions of dollars….. of fraud. Well, if there’s fraud, you want to go after the fraudsters. And you want to indict them and recover the money. And so, the Democrats could conceivably wait a reasonable period of time and then start to say: Where are the prosecutions? Where are the people you say have defrauded the government, and when are you going to start putting them in jail?”

The GOP strategist added, “But James Carville is right. The Democrats, just by being angry, are not doing themselves any good. And they’re not doing the country any good.”
