Fox News reporter Aishah Hasnie painted a bleak picture of Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) chances of getting re-elected as speaker of the House, which was set for its first vote on Friday.
Johnson is facing an uphill battle securing votes from members of his own party despite a public endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is a definitive “no” while other members of the Freedom Caucus are casting doubt on Johnson’s future as speaker.
“We will see if Mike Johnson can hang on to the gavel as of this hour,” Hasnie reported on Fox & Friends during the 8 a.m. hour. “The math is not math yet, and the numbers are not there for the speaker.”
“Republicans are entering into this new Congress with a very slim majority,” she continued. “We talk about it all the time. Here are the numbers: 219 to 215. All Democrats are expected to vote for their leader, Hakeem Jeffries. So they will not vote for Mike Johnson, which means that he can only afford to lose one Republican. Right now, there is one Republican official ‘no’ vote. That’s Thomas Massie; Multiple undecided members, though, people who don’t want to say how they’re voting until the vote actually takes place.”
