Second Lady Usha Vance announced a trip to Greenland with one of her and Vice President JD Vance’s children in the coming week.
The 39-year-old made the announcement from the Office of the Second Lady on X in a press release with an official White House letterhead. Mrs. Vance’s office said:
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Second Lady Usha Vance will travel to Greenland with her son and a United States delegation to visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata dimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.
The race brings together approximately 37 mushers and 444 dogs in a remarkable display of speed, skill, and teamwork. Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race
and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity. They will return to the United States on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
The Trump administration did not immediately comment on the press release regarding Mrs. Vance’s visit to Greenland. President Donald Trump has spoken about acquiring the Danish territory since last November’s election.
Earlier this month, Trump told a joint session of Congress he believed Greenland would eventually belong to US taxpayers.
“We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it,” Trump said during the speech. “But we need it really for international, for world security, and I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
In a message to those who inhabit the mineral-rich island, Trump said the US would keep them secure.
Trump and his surrogates in the media have claimed ownership of Greenland is crucial to keeping the Arctic free of Russian and Chinese influence. He has also slammed Danish leaders, accusing them of neglecting the territory.
Former Trump administration National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien suggested in December that Greenland could be merged with Alaska.
Donald Trump Jr. visited the territory in January and told locals his father “says hello to everyone in Greenland.”
