So, to help people be more aware of different contamination and how to detect them, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shared a basic guide on their Instagram.

Here are FSSAI-approved ways to know if your food is contaminated or not.

Physical contaminants include stones, stems, seeds, feathers, sand, nails, dust, dirt, straw, hair, etc. According to FSSAI, one should observe carefully, feel with hands or check by washing or sieving to detect physical contamination.

Chemical contamination includes preservatives, permitted additives beyond safety limits, pesticide residues, insecticides, reused oil, and cleaning chemicals are all examples of chemical contaminants. One can detect these contaminants by looking out for unusual colour, odour, and taste.

According to FSSAI, microbiological contamination includes bacteria, yeast, protozoa, mould, viruses, flies, worms, cockroaches, weevils, caterpillars, etc. They suggest observing changes in texture, odour, and colour. Also, special tests are available for each contaminant.
