The study, led by Dr W Taylor Kimberly and published in Neurology, found that even modest amounts of processed foods increase the risk of memory problems and stroke.

While previous research linked junk food to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, this study connects it to memory issues.

Dr Kimberly emphasised that the degree of food processing plays a crucial role in overall brain health.

A higher intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with an 8% increase in stroke risk, with a more pronounced effect (15% increase) among Black participants.

Increasing ultra-processed food intake by just 10% was linked to a 16% higher risk of cognitive impairment.

Conversely, eating more unprocessed or minimally processed foods could lead to a 12% lower risk of cognitive impairment and a 9% decreased risk of stroke.

While the study didn't prove a direct causal relationship, it highlights the potential importance of a healthy diet in maintaining brain health as we age.
