The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom has finally provided an answer as to why the iconic hero Link cannot talk. For the past forty years, many theories have been passed around trying to explain why the iconic video game character rarely, if ever, speaks. It is only in this most recent entry in the Zelda franchise that a story-related answer is finally provided.
One commonly accepted reason as to why Link is shown to barely talk is simply due to the fact that he has been the player character in countless games, simply serving as an avatar for people to project themselves onto. However, in Echoes of Wisdom, players instead take on the role of Princess Zelda to save Link and the Kingdom of Hyrule. Despite this shift, Link still doesn’t speak throughout the game, leaving only more questions which, thankfully, do finally have some answers.
Why Link Doesn’t Talk In Echoes Of Wisdom
The Answer Is Found In Lueberry’s Diary
The answer to why Link doesn’t talk can be found in Lueberry’s diary in Lueberry’s workshop. Reading further into the first entry reveals that Lueberry was attacked by monsters while traveling through the forest, and ended up being saved by Link while running some test with what he refers to as the “might crystal.”
Lueberry then goes on to reveal that Link was among a group of kids in Suthorn Village that fell into one of the many mysterious rifts that have sprung up across Hyrule. All who fell into the rift were able to somehow miraculously return home safely, but they all came back changed, having each lost something. While it is not specified as to what exactly each child lost, Lueberry does mention that Link ended up losing his voice while trapped in the rift, rendering him unable to speak.
What About Versions Of Link From Other Games?
These Mysteries Still Have Yet To Be Solved
Unfortunately, previous games in the Zelda franchise don’t usually provide explanations as to why their versions of Link cannot talk. However, there is a similar diary moment in Breath of the Wild that mentions why LInk can’t speak in BOTW. It can be assumed that something similar could have happened to other versions of Link, while others could have been born mute or simply chosen not to talk much. Perhaps only time will tell if the reasons for these other Links not being able to talk will finally be revealed.
The reason why Link cannot talk has been a big mystery in the Zelda franchise for many years. Although there are not answers to this question for all versions of Link, the fact that an answer has been revealed at all for one of them is incredible, and provides further insight as to what could have possibly happened to versions of Link from other games. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has provided theorists with an intriguing answer that is both exciting and rather horrifying to think about.
