Late Night With Seth Meyers will move into primetime for a night in September.
Meyers will host an expanded version of his recurring “Closer Look” segment on Sept. 11, the night after a scheduled presidential debate. The special, titled Closer Look Primetime, will take a deep dive into the first debate between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
The special will mark the first Late Night-themed primetime show since the last presidential election cycle: Meyers hosted a half-hour “Closer Look” special in October 2020.
“Closer Look” typically airs three times a week on Late Night and is one of the show’s more popular segments. The deep dives into the news of the day (with lots of jokes) have collectively earned more than 3 billion views on YouTube since the segment’s beginnings; a 12-minute “Closer Look” from Monday’s show had 1.6 million views (YouTube counts watching a video for 30 seconds as a view) as of publication time.
Sal Gentile is head writer for the “Closer Look” segments, working with Late Night head writer Alex Baze and Meyers.
As with Late Night, the special will be produced by Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. Michaels executive produces the nightly show, and Mike Shoemaker produces. Late Night is up for three Emmy awards in September, including best talk series.
