The $100,000 fine, which was handed down on Sunday, is a result of SEC‘s policy that went into effect in June 2023. Schools are fined $100,000 for their first offense, $250,000 for a second offense and $500,000 for a third offense.
The current policy says “institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area.” Fines are paid to the opposing institutions for violations during conference games.
This was Tennessee‘s first offense as the updated policy reset schools’ prior record for fines. Under the previous policy, Tennessee’s fine would have been $250,000.
This comes two weeks after the University of Arkansas was fined $250,000 when fans stormed the field after the Razorbacks defeated the Vols, Tennessee’s only loss on the season so far.
