The New England Patriots are active on social media. You can find them on X (previously Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and even TikTok while it’s still active.
However, they’re not on Bluesky, a rising competitor to X that’s gained steam in recent months. But it’s not for lack of trying, according to the head of the team’s internal content team.
In a recent episode of the “Patriots Unfiltered” podcast, co-host Fred Kirsch fielded a question from a viewer asking if the team would consider creating an account on Bluesky.
Kirsch, the vice president of content for the Kraft Sports + Entertainment group, said the Patriots’ internal content staff tried to start one, until the NFL intervened.
“Right now we’re not allowed to,” Kirsch said. “We had an account briefly on Bluesky but the league asked us to take it down because it’s not an approved social media platform for the NFL yet.”
X has been the subject and controversy in recent months, largely due to the actions of its owner, Elon Musk. The tech mogul, who purchased the platform and changed its name in 2022, has risen to prominence in the political sphere with the election of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States. Earlier this month, Musk was appointed administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump.
Musk’s influence on the platform has sparked an exodus of many high-profile users from X. Departures and boycotts of the platform increased this week when Musk made multiple gestures resembling a Nazi salute following the inauguration of President Trump.
Such departures have sparked increased interest in platforms that can serve as alternatives to X, with Bluesky having emerged as a popular candidate.
The Patriots are ready to join the app. They’re just waiting on the NFL to let them.
“Whenever the league gives us the green light we’ll get back on BlueSky,” Kirsch said.
