The Food and Drug Administration just raised its recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to the highest risk level.
On Dec. 16, Frito-Lay issued a recall for 6,344 (13-ounce) bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, according to an alert issued by the FDA. The chips were distributed to various stores and online outlets in Oregon and Washington, with customers able to buy the snacks beginning Nov. 3, 2024.
Lay’s Classic Potato Chips were the only ones included in the recall, and they were distributed in two states: Oregon and Washington. No other products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are involved.
On Jan. 27, the FDA escalated the recall to the highest risk level, Class I, which means exposure to or consumption of the product could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Here’s everything to know about the Lay’s Classic Potato Chips recall:
Why are Lay’s potato chips being recalled?
The chips may contain undeclared milk, Frito-Lay said after being informed by a consumer.
“Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product,” the FDA said on Dec. 16.
The chips were given the highest level classification because milk is one of the FDA’s eight “major food allergens,” meaning it is one of the products that can lead to hives, rash, cramps, dizziness, vomiting and/or diarrhea, swollen vocal cords, difficulty breathing and even unconsciousness among those who are allergic to it.
No allergic reactions in connection to the recall have been reported, according to Frito-Lay.
Which Lay’s potato chips are affected?
The recalled chips are in flexible 13-ounce bags distributed in Oregon and Washington with the UPC codes 28400 and 31041. Affected bags must have a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of Feb. 11, 2025 and one of the two following manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.
What should you do if you have a recalled product?
People with any recalled bag can reach out to Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday.
Anyone who is allergic or sensitive to milk should not eat the chips and throw out any affected bags.
