Demi Lovato has come under fire for spending £15 on a single strawberry.
The former Disney star, who is engaged to fellow singer Jordan Lutes, decided to try out the viral Erewhon strawberry during her trip to Kyoto, Japan. Health is wealth, as they say, but this single piece of fruit will set you back a whopping $19 [£15].
A tiny portion at a premium price, but if anyone can afford it, it’s Demi, who is worth an estimated $40million. The Skyscraper songstress took to Tiktok with a very honest review of the luxury strawberry, but it ended up rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.
In the clip, she appeared in a cream-coloured cardigan and had her brunette locks swept back as she cradled the strawberry in one hand. Before taking a bite, Demi decided to give the strawberry a sniff, telling fans: “Apparently, you’re supposed to smell it.”
She confirmed that it “smells like a strawberry,” before tucking into the large berry and rating it an eight out of 10. “It’s not tart at all,” Demi said, “which I like; I don’t like tart strawberries. But it’s not that sweet.”
She then admitted the strawberry wasn’t worth the price as she shrugged and declared: “Oh, well! Just wasted $20.” A lot of people in the comments weren’t happy with the purchase and were quick to share their views with the star.
One referenced The Hunger Games universe, which depicts a dystopian society in which The Capitol boasts displays of extreme wealth while most of the surrounding districts suffer in poverty. The comment, which has racked up over 320k likes, reads: “Watching from district 12”
Another, with over 145k likes, fumed: “This level of capitalism is actually sick,.” A third joked about the LA-based company Erewhon.
They penned: “Erewhon was 100% started by a group of uni students who wanted to run a social experiment on consumerism but ended up accidentally creating a successful grocery so now they just watch.”
However, others praised the singer for her honest take on the product. One commented: “‘I wasted $20″ — this is the most honest review yet, to be honest.”
Demi recently gushed over her soon-to-be groom Jordan “Jutes” Lutes on Valentine’s Day. She wrote: “Jordan, I cannot WAIT to marry you!! The past 3 years have been the best 3 years of my life and I have you to thank for that.
“I’m obsessed with your heart, your love and your light. I can’t wait to grow old with you and start a family together. Happy Valentine’s Day to the love of my life. I love you honey!!!”
The two went public with their romance in August 2022. Singer Demi first met with her now fiancé when they co-wrote her song, Substance, in January 2022.
Demi opened up about her relationship with Jutes during an episode of the PodcastOne podcast, LadyGang. The Camp Rock actress said: “The way that I met my boyfriend was actually in a session. He is a musician himself, but he also co-writes on other people’s music.”
She continued: “So he came into the session, and I literally was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ I texted my friends and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked In. I am so nervous. I don’t know what to do with myself’.
