The Penn State Nittany Lions first introduced their “Generations of Greatness” special uniforms back in 2017, and have worn them at least once in every season since then.
The uniforms were created to represent different eras of Penn State football, and the uniforms are a composite of those eras.

The writing on the above might be a bit difficult to read, but it provides a template for each different uniform feature, with notations on how the “GoG” uniform differs from their current. While the GoG uni is similar to the current duds for the Nittany Lions, there are several differences, including helmet TV numbers and gray facemasks, white stipes at the base of the sleeve caps, a single solid blue stripe on the pants, number fonts, white shoes, and more.
This graphic from 2019 shows the differences as well:

In 2021, they used a different graphic.

The 2017 GoG uniform has basically been unchanged since its introduction. Until this year.
Penn State is ever-so-slightly changing the GoG jersey to include a white collar, which was last worn by the team in 2010.

In addition to the white collar, the team has added a logo featuring an older Nittany Lion Shrine logo at the base of the collar.
It’s difficult to see in the video embedded above, but here’s a look at the jersey showing the white collar and logo.

Penn State wore white collar jerseys for most of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Players such as LaVar Arrington, Ki-Jana Carter, and Kerry Collins all played for PSU wearing the white collar look.
Penn State has a pretty good record when wearing its Generations of Greatness uniforms. The jerseys debuted in 2017 and the team crushed Indiana 45-14. It also has wins in 2019 (Purdue), 2022 (Minnesota), 2023 (UMass) and 2024 (Illinois) when wearing them. They were also worn against SMU in last year’s CFP (which they won). However, two of the worst losses also occurred during GoG games: 2018 against Michigan State and 2021 against Illinois (a NINE overtime game). The team didn’t wear the GoG uniforms during the 2020 COVID season.
The Nittany Lions will host Northwestern for its Homecoming game at 3:30 pm (ET) this Saturday.
What are your thoughts on the “new” jersey? And do you enjoy the Nittany Lions wearing the franken-unis?
