The last news about this recall occurred heading toward a long weekend, and today’s announced addendum hits before what may be another loungy weekend at home.
On Thursday, February 13, the FDA updated a previous recall notice citing undeclared milk in Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix. That recall has now been upgrading to a Class I, a designation reserved for recalled products that could cause serious health issues or death—defined as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The update also noted that 10,000 total cartons are included in the recall, information that was not part of the original notice.
The original recall from January 15 stated that no allergic reactions or adverse health effects had been reported in relation to the recalled products, and the first advisory was widely covered by many outlets. It’s not clear from the updated notice whether that status has changed.
The product details from the original recall are as follows:
- Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix
- Sold in two-pound (32 oz.) boxes
- UPC code 30000 65040
- “Best by” date of September 13, 2025
The earlier report as well as the update indicated the recalled product had been distributed in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, and Wisconsin. Pearl Milling Co. was a socially conscious rebrand for what was formerly known as Aunt Jemima. The creative still bears a similar aesthetic.
The Cleveland Clinic lists milk allergy has one of the most common food allergies in the U.S., with approximately 6.1 million Americans have a milk allergy—and between 2% and 6% of all children may be allergic to cow’s milk. It is important to note that a milk allergy is not the same as being lactose intolerant, as a food allergy like milk stems from an immune system reaction while lactose intolerance is a digestive condition.
