Dan Trachtenberg‘s Prey follow-up Predator: Badlands has found its protagonist – the titular violent extraterrestrial beast itself!
In a new interview with Empire, Trachtenberg reveals more juicy details of the upcoming sci-fi horror feature, most notably being that the Predator will be playing a much different role than it ever has before:
“The creature is front and centre, leading the charge […] He’s still badass, but there’s something there that touches you emotionally, too. Creating a character you connect with, but are also super-intimidated by, has been challenging. But exciting.”
The idea, he says, came from a desire to “find another essential piece of cinema that does what Prey did spiritually — pushing the franchise’s boundaries, letting us root for a hero we rarely get to root for — but in a different way. And that transformed into this big idea of rooting for the Predator.”
Trachtenberg also let readers in on more details surrounding Predator: Badlands‘ star Elle Fanning, including that she is set to play multiple characters in her role opposite the Predator:

Predator: Badlands is not a sequel to Prey, but another standalone story set in the Predator universe. Wisely, Disney has learned their lesson after releasing the Emmy Award-nominated action horror into theaters, and it’s been confirmed that Predator: Badlands WILL hit theaters in 2025.
Very slim plot details read as follows:
While traversing a wasteland, two sisters discover their horrifying past.
There’s also the hugely exciting news that Trachtenberg secretly developed another Predator movie slated for release next year, one that is rumored to be an animated anthology feature that will see Predators fighting warriors across different eras.
Empire also released the first sneak peek of Predator: Badlands (seen below), and while there’s not a huge amount to go off, it’s still very exciting to see those iconic dreads back in business.
Look out for more Predator: Badlands news as we get it!
