Warehouse club chain BJ’s Wholesale Club plans to land in North Texas with quite a splash.
The Massachusetts-based retailer plans to open at least four locations in Dallas-Fort Worth — which will be its first in the entire state. Inklings of the BJ’s arrival started to emerge last fall with public votes in Forney, but new state filings indicate more about the scope and timing of the expansion.
In addition to Forney, which is east of Dallas, BJ’s Wholesale plans locations of roughly 107,000 square feet in Fort Worth, Waxahachie and Grand Prairie. The membership-based wholesale company sells products such as groceries, electronics and home goods and is a rival of Costco.
The estimated construction cost for each store is $9.5 million, according to the filings. Information in TDLR filings is preliminary and subject to change.
The Fort Worth location will be at 5901 Altamesa Blvd., along Chisholm Trail Parkway. Construction is estimated to begin in June and be completed in February 2026. The Chisholm Trail corridor is a homebuilding and retail hub for the west side of the Metroplex. One developer has proposed a 145-acre retail center that could involve a grocery store.
The Waxahachie location will be at Highway 77 and Hedgewood Drive. Construction could start in June and be completed in January 2026.
The Grand Prairie location will be at SWC Robinson and Mayfield Road, with an estimated January 2026 completion.
The Forney store will be at U.S. Route 80 and Gateway Boulevard. It is also estimated to be completed in January 2026. The store will be located within the Villages at Gateway development, which will feature hundreds of thousands of square feet of stores, including a Target and an H-E-B.
BJ’s appeared to be eyeing a location in Allen, at the southwest corner of Alma Drive and State Highway 121. But the Allen Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 in December against changing regulations within the project’s planned development district.
BJ’s operates more than 215 clubs in 16 states and employs more than 25,000 people nationwide. BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings Inc. reported net sales of $19.5 billion in its 2023 fiscal year, which ended in February 2024, up 3% from $18.1 billion in the same period a year prior.
