LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Former Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster announced Tuesday that he is being considered for the position of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under president-elect Donald J. Trump’s administration.
In a post on X, Herbster, a longtime supporter of Trump, said it would be an honor to serve in the role.
“I ask that you keep me in your prayers over this appointment and for guidance if given an opportunity to serve,” Herbster wrote.
Herbster chaired the Rural Americans for Trump Coalition in 2024, focusing on securing rural America’s support. Herbster has also been a major donor to Trump’s campaigns and is friend of the president-elect.
Trump endorsed Herbster in the 2022 Republican gubernatorial race, but Herbster ultimately lost in the primary to the current governor, Jim Pillen. Since then, Herbster has remained committed to helping Trump regain the presidency, frequently praising him as one of the best presidents of his lifetime. Herbster has campaigned for Trump in three presidential elections, and was present at Mar-a-Lago on election night, celebrating Trump’s most recent victory.
“I have been a long-time supporter of President Donald J. Trump—even before he came down the escalator on June 16, 2015,” Herbster said in a previous statement. “On that day, I turned to my wife, Judy, and said, ‘He is the next President of the United States.’ I was on board 100% then and I still am today!”
Herbster’s political career has not been without controversy. During his 2022 gubernatorial campaign, he faced accusations from eight women, including State Sen. Julie Slama, who alleged that Herbster groped them. Herbster was never charged with any crime, and he and Slama both filed lawsuits against each other, later agreeing to drop the suits.
Herbster owns Herbster Angus Farms in Falls City.
