If you thought Angel Hernandez was bad, wait until you see this strike call from a college baseball game in South Dakota this past weekend. It might be the worst strike call of all-time and I don’t say that in jest.
The scoreboard operator was completely baffled by the umpire’s decision!
Mind you, this took place on the lowest level of college baseball during an NAIA matchup between Concordia University and Mount Mary University. I was not aware of either school prior to this viral moment. Concordia is formally known as Concordia University, Nebraska. It is a satellite campus of the Concordia system with an enrollment of less than 2,300 students located in Seward, Nebraska— population 7,643. Mount Marty is a private Benedictine university located in Yankton, South Dakota— population 15,411. The university enrolls approximately 1,100 students in total.

Both schools compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. NAIA is a step down from Division-III.
All of this goes to say that these are two very small programs in a small conference of a small division in small towns. We are not talking SEC. The umpiring crews are not the best.
And yet, this call is so terrible that even a local little league umpire would rule it as a ball.
The Bulldogs led the Lancers by a score of 7-4 in the top of the sixth inning. The former had a runner on second. Their hitter faced an 0-1 count as he stepped back into the box. Mount Marty pitcher Jake Stolnack threw down to the plate. His pitch was outside. If it was any more outside, it would’ve been a wild pitch. The catcher made a great play to prevent the ball from reaching the backstop.

Strike two!
The crowd gave an audible gasp. The scoreboard operator marked it as a ball and had to change it.
Next time you think you got a bad call, remember there’s always midwest NAIA who has it worse. pic.twitter.com/8Oq2mNRJV8

That’s bad. Concordia went on to win anyway, so the call did not have an impact on the final score. Mount Mary managed to avoid the four-game sweep with an extra-inning win in game four on Sunday but the visitors returned home with three wins. Not even the home cooking could help.
