Former Vice President Dick Cheney endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, just days after his daughter, Liz Cheney, did the same.
The late former Vice President Dick Cheney, a vocal opponent of Donald Trump, summed up his feelings towards the president with an extraordinary 23-word attack.
Cheney died aged 84 due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease last night, his family said. Cheney served as the 46th vice president of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush. He was frequently called the most powerful vice president in American history and later split from the Republican party and opposed Trump.
But in the lead-up to the 2024 election, Cheney became the latest prominent Republican to endorse Democrat and current Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

Cheney’s statement against Trump
Cheney issued a statement in September last year shortly after his daughter Liz Cheney, who represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 until 2023, revealed her father’s endorsement.
Dick issued a statement obtained by NBC News regarding his endorsement of Harris – which appeared more like a criticism of Trump than a backing of Harris.
Cheney declared: “In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.
“We each have a duty as citizens to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution,” he added. “That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Family statement
Following his death, a statement from his family read: “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.
“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country.
“And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

The move to condemn Trump in 2024 followed his daughter, Liz, making the same decision just days earlier, dealing a significant setback to Trump in the run up to the election.
She made the announcement while attending the Texas Tribune Festival. “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she declared.
“If you think about the moment that we’re in and you think about how serious this moment is, my dad believes and he’s said publicly that there’s never been an individual in our country who is as grave a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump is. And that’s the moment we’re facing.”, reports the Mirror US.
