Nationwide launch for a three-variety Butter lineup
EarthFresh has expanded its Butter Potatoes line across the United States, with distribution also ramping up in Canada. Marketed as America’s only Butter Potatoes, the lineup – Butter Golds, Butter Reds and Butter Russets – is positioned as a premium option for shoppers looking for richer flavor and consistent performance in the kitchen.
Jessica Anderson (Hughes), Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at EarthFresh, says the Butter varieties are the result of more than a decade of research and development, with breeding focused on naturally creamy texture and a pronounced buttery eating quality.
What makes Butter Potatoes different in the kitchen
Across all three varieties, EarthFresh highlights a naturally buttery, creamy interior that is intended to deliver a rich mouthfeel without needing added butter. Each type is positioned for specific uses:
- Butter Golds – golden skin and yellow flesh, with a tender, creamy texture suited to mashing, roasting and recipes where a smooth, moist finish is important.
- Butter Reds – red skin with golden flesh, designed to hold their shape after cooking, making them suitable for boiling, roasting and pan-searing.
- Butter Russets – classic russet skin with golden flesh, offering a stronger cooked potato flavor with subtle sweet and caramelized notes, and a light, fluffy texture for baking, mashing or frying.
All Butter Potatoes are all-natural and graded to internal standards for size, appearance, texture and eating quality.
Sensory testing and chef partnership
EarthFresh backed the launch with a structured sensory analysis conducted by an expert panel. Panelists identified key flavor and texture attributes – including intensity, sweetness, moisture and creaminess – and assigned each variety a score out of 100 to help characterize their profiles and differentiate them from standard table potatoes.
To translate those attributes into real-world dishes, EarthFresh is working with chef Yann Nury, who is leading recipe development. Nury describes Butter Potatoes as versatile, consistent and suitable for both simple home cooking and restaurant-style applications, and refers to them as his preferred potato choice.
Shopper research and packaging refresh
The national rollout follows an initial introduction in select U.S. markets, where EarthFresh reports strong sell-through and interest from both retailers and consumers. Ahead of the broader launch, the company commissioned shopper research with IMI International: 85 percent of American consumers surveyed indicated a positive intention to buy Butter Potatoes, with the concept outperforming industry benchmarks for new produce items.
The relaunch also includes updated branding and more sustainable packaging. Butter Golds, Butter Reds and Butter Russets are now available in 5 lb bags, with Butter Golds additionally offered in a 10 lb format for higher-volume users.
