ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina mayor is facing his fourth DWI charge.
Rocky Mount police say they arrested Sharpsburg Mayor Robert Williams last night around 5:40 p.m. after getting a call about a reckless driver on North Wesleyan Boulevard.
The 59-year-old Williams was charged with DWI, driving while license revoked, open container, and a concealed handgun permit violation.
This is the mayor’s fourth DWI arrest since 2018.
In February, Sharpsburg police arrested their mayor for DWI, possession of an open container, failing to comply with a restriction on his license, resisting arrest, and other related charges.
On December 21st, Williams was charged with DWI by Rocky Mount police after being pulled over on South Wesleyan Boulevard.
Back in May of 2018, Williams was charged with DWI hours after he was elected mayor. After a guilty plea, Williams was sentenced to a day in jail, 24 hours of community service, and two years probation.
The mayor’s authority remains suspended after a vote on January 6th by the town board.
Williams was re-elected in 2021 and his term expires in two years.
