A fan robbed Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy of the chance to make an impressive catch in Tokyo on Wednesday.
But it wasn’t just any fan. It was former Detroit Lions quarterback Rodney Peete.
The bizarre interaction occurred during the sixth inning of the Tokyo Series game against the Chicago Cubs. Seiya Suzuki hit a foul ball out of play, and when Muncy stretched over the protective netting and stuck out his glove, a fan caught it in front of him.
Muncy was immediately visibly frustrated, but Peete, who was drafted by the Lions in 1989 and started 47 games in Detroit to start his 16-year career, responded with an extended stare down and cheeky grin.
Peete is remembered for his stellar football career at USC, but he was also an infielder for the Trojans who was drafted four times, including by the Tigers in 1990 after he had already begun his pro football career.
Peete, dressed in a blue Dodgers sweatshirt, was sitting next to his wife supporting their son, RJ Peete, who has been a Dodgers clubhouse attendant since 2016.
The Dodgers won the game 6-3 to sweep the two-game series. Hopefully there’s room in the carry-on for a ball from one of the few MLB games ever played in Japan.
