When planning the menu for their wedding, to-be-weds often curate dishes that reflect their shared memories, cultural background, or personal tastes. When one bride and groom were deciding on the cuisine for their nuptials, they knew every culinary item would be vegan because both of them abstain from eating meat. One guest, however, was personally offended by this decision—particularly their choice to display a vegan cake that wasn’t labeled as such, according to a recap of the situation on Reddit’s “Am I the A——“ on November 18, 2024.
The bride told the internet that she and her now-husband were transparent with her invitees about their menu from the start, so everyone knew what to expect. “We made it clear in advance that the food and cake would be plant-based, and no one complained—until the reception,” the bride wrote. At their party, a three-tiered cake adorned with edible flowers and made with animal-free ingredients was the focal point—something the groom’s aunt, Linda, didn’t like very much.
At the end of the night, Linda confronted the bride, looking “visibly upset.” “She said it was ‘disrespectful’ to have a vegan cake on display because it felt like I was ‘pushing my lifestyle’ on everyone,” the bride recalled of Linda’s reaction. “I told her the cake wasn’t meant to make a statement, it was just the dessert we chose for our wedding.”
Ignoring the bride’s explanation, Linda demanded that the bride take measures to resolve the presumed problem. “She insisted I either move the cake off the main table or add a sign saying it was vegan so people weren’t ‘tricked’ into eating it,” the bride continued. The bride refused to oblige because “1) It was my wedding, 2) It’s a cake, not propaganda, and 3) No one else seemed to care,” she listed. “Linda ended storming out.” Instead of holding Linda accountable, the bride’s in-laws—including the woman’s husband—are blaming her for failing to keep the peace.
The internet, however, was in opposition, claiming that the bride did nothing wrong, especially considering she was upfront with her attendees from the get go. “You already told everyone all the catering would be vegan,” a Redditor recapped. “No reason to expect the cake should be any different. Not sure what she was expecting here. Let her have her tantrum. Don’t ever invite her to dinner.” Others were confused why it was such a big deal that the cake was vegan in the first place. “What a silly thing to get mad about, too,” another Redditor added. “Vegan food is just food.” Another stated that the cake “is just absent of certain ingredients. The horror.”
Many people applauded the bride’s decision to refrain from labeling the vegan dessert. “Putting up a sign would have rewarded her bad, entitled behavior,” someone pointed out. “You had no reason to do it.” Others thought Linda’s demand to add a label contradicted her concerns. “It’s not ‘pushing it on people’ if you don’t even mention the fact that it’s vegan,” another individual wrote.
