Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) revealed on Tuesday that he warned Trump secretary of defense nominee Pete Hegseth his Senate confirmation would be “a very unpleasant process for him and his family.”
“I’m supporting Pete’s confirmation and I believe ultimately he will be confirmed,” said Cornyn during an appearance on Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt Tonight. “I know of no one who’s said that they will vote against him.”
The form Senate majority whip, however, warned that the experience would be “very unpleasant” and involve “unnamed accusations.”
“It’s important for all of these nominees to come around and answer questions. I told Pete this is gonna be a very unpleasant process for him and his family, having been involved in the Kavanaugh hearings,” said Cornyn. “I know there will be unnamed accusations and some things that are going to be hurtful, not only to him and his family, but he’s ready for that, his wife is ready for that, and I’m confident he will be confirmed.”
On Trump’s other controversial nominees, Cornyn said, “We’ll take them one at a time and each one of them presents different qualifications, but I think there’s a presumption that President Trump, having won the election, should have his team, and barring any extraordinary circumstances, I think that’s what the outcome will be.”
Several accusations have already surfaced against Hegseth, including allegations of sexual assault and workplace alcoholism, since Trump announced he would be nominating the former Fox & Friends Weekend for secretary of defense. Hegseth has denied the accusations.
While Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) initially expressed concern over Hegseth’s nomination, she announced on Monday that she would “support” the former Fox News host after Trump’s allies reportedly made her life “extremely uncomfortable.”
