INDIANAPOLIS — What sandwich is the state of Indiana known for?
Indiana State Senator Andy Zay, a Republican from Huntington, wants the breaded tenderloin sandwich to be the official state sandwich of Indiana.
Senate Bill 21, a bill titled “state sandwich,” had its first reading on Monday in the Indiana State Senate. The bill was referred to the Indiana Senate’s Committee on Commerce and Technology.
If the bill passes in its current form, a new chapter would be added to the Indiana Code to designate the breaded tenderloin sandwich, made from Indiana-raised pork, as “the official state sandwich of Indiana.” The bill, authored by Zay, would be effective on July 1, 2026.
This is not the first time Zay has filed a bill surrounding the official state sandwich. Senate Bill 322 was authored by Zay in 2023 to name the state sandwich as the breaded tenderloin.
At that time, the bill was referred to the Indiana State Senate’s Committee on Commerce and Technology, and no further action was taken on that particular bill that session of the Indiana General Assembly.
The bill can be read in its original form in the document below:
