The incident allegedly happened during the quarterfinal game between Forest Park and Battlefield.
HAYMARKET, Va. — Controversy at a Prince William County high school football game last week has sparked an investigation into potential cheating. There are allegations of electronic devices being used by volunteers who are responsible for measuring downs and distances, otherwise known as chain gangs.
The accusations were made following a playoff game between Battlefield and Forest Park High Schools last Friday night.
Prince William County Schools say members of the chain gang working the game, which was held at Battlefield, were found to be inappropriately using communication devices.
Principals from both schools issued a joint statement to families after Friday’s game.
They say volunteers working the first down chains violated protocol, and that once it was brought to the attention of the Student Activities Management Department, during the game, Prince William County Schools say the volunteers were dismissed.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, line to gain, or chain gang crews, are forbidden from communicating with the visiting team and using cellphones or other electronic devices while performing their duties.
Battlefield beat Forest Park 27 to 16 to advance to the semifinal round this week.
Prince William County Schools says once its investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Virginia High School League, which will assist in determining if penalties are warranted.
The letter sent to families of both schools on Saturday is below:
“Dear Forest Park and Battlefield High School Families,
We would like to share more information with you about a situation that occurred last night during the varsity football playoff game. It was reported that the volunteers working the first-down chains were inappropriately using communication devices. Once discovered, the referees asked the volunteers to remove the devices. The chain gang volunteers were asked to leave the game to mitigate any further disruptions.
This incident was reported to the Prince William County Public Schools Student Activities Management Department, who immediately initiated an investigation. The results of this investigation will be forwarded to the Virginia High School League, who will assist in determining if penalties are warranted.
Amid these circumstances, we want to take a moment to recognize the tremendous dedication and effort our student athletes have demonstrated throughout the season. Their commitment to excellence, both on and off the field, is a source of pride for our entire school community. As we move forward, we remain steadfast in upholding the values of integrity and sportsmanship that define our programs, ensuring that fair play and respect continue to be at the heart of every competition.
