Fox Business host Larry Kudlow defended President Donald Trump amid the ongoing government shutdown, exclaiming that “this isn’t Trump’s fault!”
The shutdown entered its second month on Saturday, as Senate Democrats and Republicans remained at an impasse on a GOP-crafted continuing resolution to fund the government. Although Republicans control the chamber, seven Democratic votes are needed to advance the legislation past a procedural hurdle. Democrats are insisting that Republicans amend the bill to renew healthcare premium subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire on Dec. 31. However, the GOP has refused to budge.
Trump has gone so far as to demand that the Senate eliminate its 60-vote cloture rule, which would allow Republicans to pass their resolution with a simple 51-vote majority. However, Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has given no indication at this point that Senate Republicans would do so. Changing the rule itself would require just 51 votes, but many senators – including Republicans – regard the filibuster as a safeguard that protects the rights of the minority party.
On Monday’s edition of Kudlow, the host went off on Democrats, accusing them of causing the shutdown because of their “Trump derangement syndrome.”
“When does this end?” Kudlow wondered aloud to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). “There’s always a reason why there’s somehow gonna be a new C.R., but the Democrats keep opposing it, ok? I think it has a lot to do with the Trump derangement syndrome. But this isn’t Trump’s fault! He didn’t do this! They’re the ones doing it!”
“I totally agree,” Jordan replied. “You’ve got [Democratic Sen.] John Fetterman saying this is the Democrats’ fault. You’ve got the largest federal government employee union saying open up the government. And still they won’t do it because of what you just described, this Trump derangement syndrome. And they try to flip it and say somehow it’s President Trump’s fault.”
