Here’s why the chain is shutting down all 1,700 locations for 24 hours.
WASHINGTON — If you’re planning a last-minute garden refresh or a home improvement project, you might want to double-check your to-do list before Sunday, April 20 rolls around.
Lowe’s, one of the largest home improvement retailers in the U.S., has announced it will close all 1,751 of its stores nationwide this Easter Sunday, giving its associates a paid day off to spend with family and friends.
“Lowe’s stores will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 20th to show appreciation to Lowe’s associates for their dedication to serving our customers. This day off will give our associates the opportunity to spend some extra time with their loved ones,” said a spokesperson with the company.
The move aligns with the company’s holiday closure practices. Lowe’s has consistently closed its doors on Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, and this Easter Sunday, it’s joining the ranks of other major retailers that opted to close in 2024, including JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Michaels.
As of March 2025, Lowe’s operates 1,751 stores across the country. That’s a lot of lumber, mulch and paint rollers taking a day of rest.
The decision isn’t purely symbolic. Easter Sunday, while not a federal holiday, is often a quieter day for retail, with many families attending religious services or enjoying a slower, more reflective pace. For some companies, closing for Easter is both a nod to the holiday’s religious significance and a practical move to allow employees time off during a period of typically lower foot traffic.
Still, not all chains go dark. Stores like Walmart, CVS, and Trader Joe’s have remained open on Easter in recent years, catering to last-minute shoppers and holiday hosts.
Lowe’s will be back to business as usual on Monday, but on Easter Sunday, it’s lights out and doors closed.
