A video has resurfaced in which Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the deadly New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, talks about his military background and career. In the video, Jabbar introduces himself as a property manager and shares that he had worked for ten years in the military as a human resources and IT specialist.
Jabbar, who was born in Beaumont, Texas, mentions in the 2020 video, titled “Personal Introduction,” that he worked in various roles, including in business development and data engineering at major companies like Deloitte and Accenture. In the video, which has since been taken down, Jabbar describes how his military service taught him the importance of discipline, service, and attention to detail.
The 42-year-old suspect is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan. In the video, Jabbar explains that his military experience helped him understand “the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously, dotting i’s and crossing t’s to make sure that things go off without a hitch.” In the video, he sat next to a framed poster with the word “Discipline” in bold, and near a book titled “Leadership.”
In addition to his military career, Jabbar held degrees in computer science and information technology, earning an associate degree from Central Texas College in 2010 and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University in 2017. He also obtained a real estate license in 2019, which expired in 2023.
Authorities are now looking into a series of disturbing videos Jabbar made before the attack. These videos suggest that Jabbar had been planning violence for some time. He spoke about initially wanting to kill his family but later decided to join ISIS. In the videos, he mentioned having dreams that led him to make this decision.
Jabbar is suspected of driving a truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve, killing at least 15 and injuring many others. Authorities say he had an ISIS flag and improvised explosive devices in the truck. After the attack, Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police.
Law enforcement is now examining the videos to better understand what led Jabbar, a former military servicemember, to commit such a violent act.
