As free agency approaches, one team bowed out of the Russell Wilson sweepstakes. According to Rob Maadi of the Associated Press, Wilson will not go to the Las Vegas Raiders to reunite with his former head coach, Pete Carroll.
Wilson will have suitors in free agency, including teams like the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans, but the Steelers remain interested in bringing back the veteran signal-caller for another season. If they can not get a deal done with Justin Fields, it might be what happens.
Ultimately, if the Steelers end up signing Fields, Wilson will hit the market and have suitors. As for Wilson returning to the Steelers, even after sputtering to end the year, his 16 touchdowns to five interceptions is a sterling stat line that could allow some people to talk themselves into the idea of Wilson.
The Steelers will make their decision likely before the legal tampering period of March 10, which will inform how they want to attack the entire free agency process from there on out.
