BERLIN, N.H. (WCAX) – As President Trump’s trade war continues to heat up, a steel company in our region says its business is booming.
Capone Iron Corporation has a plant in Berlin, New Hampshire, that manufactures steel beams used in bridges and buildings across New England.
Stephen Capone, the owner of the Massachusetts-based plant, tells CNN that the president’s tariffs could be a game changer and that his plants could triple their production without competition from Canada.
It comes as Canada, the largest supplier of steel and aluminum to the U.S., said Wednesday it will place 25% reciprocal tariffs on steel products and also raise taxes on a host of items: tools, computers and servers, display monitors, sports equipment, and cast-iron products.
Capone is pushing for tariffs on all steel imports and is urging state and local governments to prioritize purchasing local steel for their projects even if it comes at a higher cost.
