SECURITY experts believe that Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce may have been burglarized by a “sophisticated” crime group.
Kelce and Mahomes were victims of a spree of robberies in the Kansas City area.
Kansas City Fox affiliate WDAF-TV is investigating the robberies and spoke with a security expert about the nature of the break-ins.
“This is a sophisticated operation, it’s not some guy that’s going down to the local pawn shop,” expert Mike Barbieri told WDAF-TV.
The spree of robberies appears to be connected to a “highly intelligent” crime group, the outlet reported.
This conclusion comes after burglars were spotted robbing another home near Mahomes and Kelce, taking over $500,000 in jewelry.
The U.S. Sun also revealed that the robbery took Kelce’s first Super Bowl jersey from his home.
Sources confirmed to WDAF-TV that police believe the robbers are involved with a South American crime ring.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all that this crime spree that is going across the entire country is designed by some very sophisticated people in somewhat of a cartel,” Barbieri said.
“If you have a particular individual that’s an athlete, a wealthy CEO, you can find out just about anything you need to find out about these people online.”
The Kansas City Chiefs stars and other residents of the city aren’t the only targets of this spree though.
Other professional athletes have been targeted in Minneapolis and Milwaukee.
NBA player Bobby Portis was one of the victims in that crime spree, where he said robbers took his prized possessions.
Barbieri believes that the high-profile robberies are planned weeks in advance to gain intelligence on the victims.
“Anybody that’s had their home worked on recently and then miraculously had it burglarized, you can draw a very interesting conclusion from that,” he said.
“Some of the people that were on the jobsite may know people in these cartels and may be selling the information.”
The local police department has refused to comment on the current investigations into the robberies but has reassured its commitment to keeping citizens safe.
“Leawood Police Department will not comment on any open investigations,” it wrote.
