Gavin Newsom is looking like a winner this Election Day as polls suggest Proposition 50 is cruising to victory in California, and consequently a “whining” Donald Trump is having an online temper tantrum.
Taking to his Truth Social this morning as voters in the Golden State, New Jersey, Virginia and New York City, among others, go to the polls on what is shaping up as an early referendum on Trump 2.0, the former Apprentice host was throwing brimstone and fire Newsom’s way.
“The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED,” Trump posted Tuesday morning as the final day of voting out West kicked off. “All ‘Mail-In’ Ballots, where the Republicans in that State are ‘Shut Out,’ is under very serious legal and criminal review. STAY TUNED!”
Facing some quickly crumbling opposition from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Prop 50 was instigated as a response to Trump’s desire to retain GOP control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterms via surgical gerrymandering in Red States like Texas. Out West, Prop 50 would see California redistricting its congressional delegation and possibly flipping as many as five Republican seats to keep the Dems in the race next year.
Officially Newsom’s team did not respond to Deadline’s request today on Trump’s threats to Prop 50 and by inference the term-limited governor’s possible White House 2028 bid.
However, as the governor has done many times in the past several months, Sacramento took a Ritchie Rich crybaby whack at Trump.
Never a fan of mail-in ballots, except when he is, Trump had no direct response to Newsom’s poke as of Tuesday afternoon.
At today’s White House briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about POTUS’ posting. She replied, “There’s fraud in California’s elections, it’s just a fact.” Asked what evidence she and the administration had for that assertion, Leavitt added: “They have a universal mail-in voting system that we know is ripe for fraud. If you want to deny that, I’m happy to provide you all of the evidence.”
Declaring that Trump is looking into a potential executive order over the California vote, the WH spokesperson went on to cite a core complaint of “fraudulent ballots … in the names of illegal aliens who shouldn’t be voting in American elections.”
With millions of mail-in ballots already turned in, polling stations in California are open until 8 p.m. PT for during in-person voting on Prop 50 — the only initiative on the statewide ballot.
Under the election laws of America’s most populous state, citizens in line at 8 p.m., still can cast a vote. While California is notoriously slow in counting ballots, the strong number of early voting for Prop 50 makes it look likely that a result could be called before midnight PT — which could trigger another Trump rant.
