Billie Eilish‘s song Birds of a Feather has been confirmed as the most streamed song on Spotify in 2024.
From the Grammy-winning singer’s third album Hit Me Hard and Soft, the song earned an enormous 1,781,000,000 listens since its release in May.
The song isn’t just a hit on streaming platforms, but reached Number Two in the official UK singles chart and Billboard’s Hot 100 in the US.
It’s also been nominated for three Grammy Awards: Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and best Pop Solo Performance.
Sabrina Carpenter’s infectious earworm Espresso came in as the number two most streamed song of the year, earning just 650,000 fewer listens than Birds of a Feather.
Carpenter’s song managed to top the UK charts and is also nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the Grammys.
Finneas, her co-writer, producer and brother, revealed to Variety last month that despite encouragement from friends and collaborators, he struggled to believe Bird of a Feather would be the massive hit it turned out to be.
‘In some ways. I’m sort of extra-mistrustful when people tell me that they think something’s gonna be a big hit, because it feels like jinxing it — or because, usually, people say that about stuff that sounds like something else that already exists,’ he said.
‘You know, nobody said that about Bad Guy before it came out, and I think the reason nobody said that was that it really sounded new. Anyway, that being said, every time we played Birds of a Feather for the label or our close friends, they would kind of freak out.’
At just 23 years old, Eilish and her brother, 27, have already been dominating the pop world for years.
The pop star appeared on the Glastonbury stage in 2022, becoming the youngest ever headliner on the Pyramid Stage and her fame has only grown since.
She’s now gearing up for the UK leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, which will reach Glasgow on July 7 with two shows before heading down for a six-show stretch in London’s O2.
After this, the Happier Than Ever singer will play four gigs starting on July 19 at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena.
Billie recently opened up about her experience in 2024 in an interview with Vanity Fair – before she knew she’d achieved yet another milestone with Birds of a Feather.
‘I’ve done nothing but make friends all year and gotten so close with people that I wasn’t with before, and became friends with people I used to be friends with again,’ she said.
‘It’s just been a year filled with friendship, which honestly, even though I was saying a lot of things that I wanted to do, that was the real thing that I wanted to do and I really did it, and it was awesome.
‘And yes, I’ve had a lot of good sex. So you’re welcome, Billie.’ she joked.
Billie previously revealed in November 2023 to Variety that she is attracted to women.
‘I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.
‘I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life,’ she said. ‘I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.’
She later shared that she hadn’t meant to ‘come out’ in the interview.
Eilish told the publication in December: ‘I saw the article, and I was like, “Oh I guess I came out today.” OK cool. It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.’
Billie also explained that she assumed people knew she was interested in women. ‘But I kind of thought, “Wasn’t it obvious?” I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it.
‘I’m just like, “Why can’t we just exist?” I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.’
