NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) – The state says it has reached a multi-million dollar settlement with a company it claims was violating environmental protection laws and potentially impacting not just the air, but also Long Island Sound.
Pike Fuels, formerly Gulf Oil, operated a petroleum storage facility at the New Haven terminal for more than 35 years.
The state alleges during a routine inspection a few years ago, it discovered the company falsified records, including inaccurate emissions reporting, along with failing to inspect its tanks for leaks and even building a new gasoline storage tank without the proper permit.
“Let me tell you what happened here, they took forms and literally whited out from previous years’ information, and then, using a pen, doctored up the form. That’s how obvious and brazen it was,” said Attorney General William Tong.
As part of the $2,000,000 settlement, New Haven will get $200,000 to put toward first responders and environmental justice initiatives.
