One of the breakout stars of The White Lotus ripped Saturday Night Live for its Trump-themed parody of the hit HBO drama.
In a series of posts to her Instagram stories, Aimee Lou Wood made clear she was not a fan of the SNL send-up.
“I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny,” Wood wrote.
“Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago,” she added. “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
The shocking sketch imagined Trump, his family, and members of his cabinet as guests at the seedy resort in Thailand where the majority of the action took place in the show’s third season. Trump was the stand-in for Tim Ratliff — the patriarch of a troubled family whose world falls apart during a doomed week-long stay. HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others were lampooned in the sketch — as they also were depicted in place of various characters from the show.
Wood’s character, Chelsea, was the only one in the SNL sketch who was not replaced by a Trump-connected figure. She was portrayed by SNL’s Sarah Sherman — who wore an unflattering set of fake teeth to exaggerate Wood’s appearance. Wood concurred with a fan on her Instagram feed who observed, “The only character who wasn’t political was Chelsea, and they were clearly just taking the piss out of your appearance.”
The sketch also showed Trump getting very cozy with Vladimir Putin, and had characters patterned after Donald Trump Jr. and Tiger Woods recreate an infamous scene from the HBO show depicting incest.
