Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s office faced protests this week from local residents angered by her support for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The protests focused on Greene’s stance regarding several key issues, including cuts to Medicaid and Musk’s role in reducing staffing at the Social Security Administration.
News Channel 9 reported that many of the protesters were particularly upset by plans to slash Medicaid funding, with some also criticizing Musk’s influence in government programs that impact vulnerable citizens. Others voiced concerns about the treatment of veterans under the current administration.
Carmen Shuler, a local resident, shared her personal reason for protesting. “I’m out here today because my son is a disabled combat Marine who served in Iraq,” Shuler explained. “He is in jeopardy of losing his benefits and becoming homeless.”
In response, Greene issued a strong statement to News Channel 9, blasting the protesters and accusing them of misrepresenting her position.
“These 35 Democrat activists do not represent the nearly 800,000 residents of Northwest Georgia,” the statement read. “Plus, their signs, painted in Ukrainian colors, are full of lies. President Trump and Congresswoman Greene have said over and over they will protect Medicare and Social Security for Americans who have earned it—not for illegal aliens or fraudsters who don’t deserve it. DOGE is focused on exposing the waste, fraud, and abuse in these programs, and that’s exactly what Congresswoman Greene is doing as Chairwoman of the DOGE Committee in Congress. To save our country, we must address our $36 trillion debt, which Democrats apparently don’t care about.”
However, an analysis from Yale’s Budget Lab, reported by Raw Story, recently estimated that Republican budget proposals would cut Medicaid spending by $880 billion over ten years while also reducing taxes that mostly benefit the wealthiest Americans by $4.5 trillion during the same period.
