When I was in college, I didn’t really have time to eat meals. I was more of a snacker, preferring to get my nutrition through my random ”girl dinners.” A charcuterie board to end the night? Sign me up! A bag of chips, turkey, and some bread? So yummy. Needless to say, I became well versed in my snacking habits (much to my mom’s dismay).
I always threw something sweet in the mix to change things up: a bag of Gushers, a Fruit Roll Up—the possibilities were endless. But one day during the fall semester of my sophomore year, my Uncle David introduced me to a sweet snack that changed my world: fluffernutter sandwiches.
What is a Fluffernutter Sandwich?
Originating in New England, fluffernutters are essentially a sandwich of marshmallow cream and peanut butter slathered between two pieces of white bread.
The sandwich first appeared as ”Liberty Sandwiches” with the recipe dating back to 1918 by Massachusetts native Emma Curtis. It was published in a booklet of recipes used to help advertise Emma and her brother’s Snowflake Marshmallow Creme, a product manufactured in their kitchen. That fluffernutter recipe was described as “slices of ‘war bread’ spread with peanut butter and marshmallow creme; cut into triangles and served as dainty sandwiches.” They’re incredibly sweet and ooey-gooey, and are a childhood favorite of many on the East Coast and beyond.
Fluffernutter sandwiches were also a college staple for my uncle. When his fridge or pantry were empty, he continuously turned to fluffernutters to satiate his appetite. Sometimes he would add peanut butter, but most days, he preferred just to eat marshmallow cream sandwiches.
How to Make a Fluffernutter Sandwich
Fluffernutter sandwiches are incredibly easy to make. On one slice of white bread, spread on the peanut butter of your choice (creamy is what I prefer to use). On another slice, carefully spread on the marshmallow cream. Then, you can microwave the halves for 30 seconds (topping-side up), if you’d prefer your sandwich warm. Or skip this step and put the two halves together and enjoy.
