President-elect Donald Trump mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, referring to him as “Governor” of “the Great State of Canada” after floating the possibility of Canada becoming part of the United States.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” wrote Trump in a post on Truth Social. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”
Last month, Trump reportedly joked about the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st state after Trudeau claimed during a dinner with the president-elect that his country would be economically devastated by Trump’s proposed tariffs.
“Your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?” Trump asked, according to Fox News’ Peter Doocy. “Maybe Canada should just become the 51st state.”
Trump also reportedly told Trudeau he could stay on as governor of the new state.
Trump went on to seemingly confirm the report by posting an AI-generated picture of himself on a snowy mountain next to the Canadian flag, captioned, “Oh Canada!”
On Monday, Trudeau warned Trump’s second administration would be “a little more challenging” to deal with than the first before suggesting that Trump’s proposed tariffs would backfire on the White House.
“Trump got elected on a commitment to make life better and more affordable for Americans, and I think people south of the border are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive,” he said.
