President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss ‘dividing up certain assets’ in Ukraine as part of ongoing peace talks. He mentioned that the discussion, which will take place during a phone call on Tuesday, would include assets like ‘land and power plants.’
Trump made the comments while flying back to Washington from Florida on Air Force One. He said, “A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end.” He added, “We’re already talking about that, dividing up certain assets.”
Trump’s remarks come after a Russian official said that Russia would demand strong guarantees in any peace deal, including that NATO countries will keep Ukraine out of the alliance and that Ukraine will remain neutral.
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Grushko, also restated the Kremlin’s position that Russia is firmly against the idea of NATO observers being sent to Ukraine.
