Tom Brady doesn’t have a rooting interest in Super Bowl LIX, he’s just hoping to see some good football between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
But if the Chiefs come away victorious, he’s not going to be mad.
“The only thing I root for in these situations are great games,” Brady said on a recent episode of the “Let’s Go!” podcast. “I will say if the Chiefs win, I will be very happy for them. I mean, what they’ve achieved is unmatched.
“And I think that’s cool because people always hated on us for so many years,” he continued. “And I didn’t understand it because all I did was like — we try to do things the right way, we try to go out there and compete for our job and win.”
The Chiefs are going for a three-peat — something Brady’s New England Patriots didn’t do over the course of their dominant 20-year run that included six Super Bowl titles.
There’s been plenty of chatter whether Brady or Patrick Mahomes is the better quarterback, or if the Chiefs or Patriots are the better dynasty. And while Brady — who’s calling the game for FOX — isn’t rooting for anyone, he can’t see how people aren’t rooting for the Chiefs.
“There’s an excellence that I appreciate about people who are doing other things at really high levels, because you understand the commitment that it takes for them to do what they’re doing,” Brady said. “And to be in this country and to not cheer for excellence is beyond me. … It’s incredible to see this team withstand all the adversities they faced over the course of not just this season or last season, the year before, they just plowed on, nothing’s distracted them. They’ve just continued to push forward and win a lot of games.”
There are plenty of fans who believe the Chiefs have continued to push forward and win a lot of games due to help from the officials. It’s been a longstanding theory in the NFL considering Kansas City has often been on the receiving end of controversial calls that end up helping them en route to a win over the last few years.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell shot down that theory, but admitted the officiating needed to be more consistent throughout the league as a whole.
