PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler faced a judge Thursday on a charge of driving under the influence.
The recently retired NFL star was arrested in North Providence earlier this month.
Butler pleaded not guilty and his bail was set at $1,000 personal recognizance.
Court records show that his attorney is asking to waive a jury trial.
The judge allowed Butler to drive as long as the case moves forward.
He also faces several traffic violations and is expected to appear before the traffic tribunal on Friday.

According to the police report, officers saw a car stopped in the westbound lane of Mineral Spring Avenue, blocking traffic.
Butler told police he was coming from a studio in Providence where he was making music, according to the report.
An officer wrote in the report Butler smelled like alcohol, was slurring his speech, and had bloodshot, watery eyes.
Police said Butler was “sweating profusely,” and when officers asked him if he’d been drinking alcohol, he told them, “Just take me to jail.”
He was taken to the police station where he refused to take a chemical test.
Butler is best known for intercepting Russell Wilson at the goal line in Super Bowl XLIX, securing the Patriots’ fourth title.
12 News has reached out to Butler’s attorney and has not yet heard back.
